Top 5 Tips For Families To Save Money On Their Electricity Bills Around Their Home

Hi everyone, Corey from Uncommon Electricians here, your local electrician business based right here in Ipswich. Like everyone else, our family is keeping our eyes on the rising costs of living, especially our electricity bills. That’s why I want to share with you some simple and effective ways to reduce your energy consumption and save money on your bills. Here are my top 5 tips for families to save money on their electricity bills around their home.

1. Switch to a better deal

The fastest way to potentially save hundreds of dollars is to switch plans, taking the deal that is the best for your circumstances. You can use a free federal government website Energy Made Easy to compare plans, conditions and prices for you. All you need is a recent bill to plug in your numbers. The Australian Energy Regulator says switching plans can save customers more than $400 a year. That’s a lot of money that you can spend on something else!

2. Make use of off-peak times

If you’re on a flexible-pricing plan (where you pay different rates for different times of the day), use appliances in off-peak times when rates are lower. This could save you up to $100 a year, according to the Victorian Energy Saver website. That usually means running the washing machine or dishwasher overnight or on the weekend. You can also use a timer or a smart meter to monitor your usage and schedule your appliances accordingly. This way, you can make the most of your electricity without paying too much for it.

3. Block draughts in your home

Stop paying to heat or cool the street! Look around your place and seal up any gaps, draughty doors or floors where air is escaping. Stick-on foam door seals cost a few dollars at a hardware store and take minutes to install. Even simple things like door snakes can help. If you own your home, you could even consider putting insulation in your roof to keep things toasty inside. This will make your home more comfortable and reduce your heating and cooling costs.

4. Choose energy-efficient appliances

When it’s time to replace your old appliances, look for ones that have high energy ratings and low standby power consumption. Energy-efficient appliances can save you up to $200 a year on your bills, according to Energy Made Easy. For example, an LED light bulb uses 75% less energy than an incandescent one and lasts up to 10 times longer. That means less hassle and more savings for you.

5. Consider solar PV and batteries

If you want to take your energy savings to the next level, you could invest in solar PV panels and batteries for your home. Solar PV panels generate electricity from the sun, which you can use during the day or store in batteries for later use. This can reduce your reliance on the grid and lower your bills significantly. Depending on your location, size of system and usage patterns, you could save up to $900 a year with solar PV and batteries. Plus, you’ll be doing your part for the environment by using clean and renewable energy.

Conclusion

These are just some of the ways you can save money on your electricity bills around your home. By following these tips, you can not only reduce your expenses but also enjoy a more comfortable and sustainable lifestyle.
