Becoming Uncommon

Our Journey from Chalk Electrical to Uncommon Electricians:

It was September 2015. We were standing on the rocks, looking out over the ocean at Caloundra. No kids, minimal responsibilities – just a dream and a toolbox. Corey had been itching to start his own business for years and the timing just felt right. He gave notice at his work and off we went. The Chalk Electrical era had begun.

Like many tradies turned business owners, the first few months (and years!) were a baptism of fire. Corey slogging out long days on the tools and long nights in the office. Shannon juggling the admin while working full time, renovating our Queenslander on the weekends. Quotes, finance, accounting, invoices, websites, photos, marketing, builders going bust, lawyers, headaches, sick days, sleepless nights, debt collection, a few rude customers and a whole lot of amazing ones. Throw in a couple of kids and looking back we don’t know how we did it. It was one heck of a ride, but we knew we wanted to change our industry. We wanted to do something different. We always have – and still do.

Fast forward to 2021. Change, fear and uncertainty were just part of the woodwork for so many. The level of polarization in the world seemed constantly growing, but our drive to make a difference was growing alongside it. We dreamed of a company built on people and culture. Masters of our craft, innovative and elite, with humility and generosity at our core. Celebrating shared experiences while embracing the uniqueness of our teammates, our clients and our community. Connecting our drive for social impact, with our obsession for delivering excellence. The word for it hit us like a bolt of lightning – Uncommon. It fits us like a glove, and we haven’t looked back since.

September 2022 – Uncommon Electricians is officially launched. After a lengthy rebrand process, and reinventing every aspect of our company, we’re elated to be seeing our dreams come to life. We’ve developed a Trademarked method of operating that’s never been seen in the trade industry – possibly any industry for that matter. We have a workplace culture like no other, standards of professional excellence and an approach to customer service that changes how we view electricians and trade companies as a whole.

But the thing we are most proud of is our social impact, or our company ‘soul’. By getting to know each other and our clients, by showcasing the diversity within our community, by empowering the next generation to change how they think through our Uncommon Kids™ initiative – we are spreading our message that being different is a superpower. We’re not just Uncommon by name, we’re Uncommon by nature – just like you, and every single person you come into contact with.

So that’s the story of how we became Uncommon. It’s more than a business for us – it’s our heart and soul with an ABN attached. We’re proud as punch to be out there serving our community and hope the Uncommon legacy will live on for many years to come.

Why “It’s Been Like That for Years” Is a Dangerous Electrical Assumption

“It’s been like that for years.” We hear this phrase almost every week at Uncommon Electricians — usually when a homeowner points out a flickering light, a warm power point, or a circuit breaker that trips “every now and then”. While it’s completely understandable to assume that long-standing electrical issues are harmless, this belief is one of the most dangerous assumptions a homeowner can make.
